Aerospace Engineering – 1990
After graduating from Texas A&M University with a Bachelor of Science in Aerospace Engineering in 1990, Mr. Hughes began his career at Lockheed Martin, providing engineering support to NASA for both the Space Station and Space Shuttle Programs in aerothermodynamics. After 6 years in the space program, he transitioned into the consulting world by taking a position with Accenture (then Anderson Consulting). Initially focused on large financial system implementations for the energy industry, Ruston transitioned into e-commerce when web-based marketplaces increased in the early 2000s.
In 2005, driven by a desire to strike a balance between work and family life, Ruston made a strategic career move. He assumed the leadership of the newly formed IT Project Management Office at Baylor College of Medicine. Over the course of a decade, Ruston spearheaded numerous large clinical systems implementations and served as the Executive Director for IT Clinical Operations.
In 2015, Ruston transitioned back to consulting and rejoined Accenture as a Senior Manager within Accenture Health. He was responsible for growing and developing the Houston consulting market by providing innovative solutions that help clients deliver more effective, efficient, and affordable healthcare. During his 12+ years in healthcare IT, Ruston developed a broad understanding of the complexities involved in successfully integrating people, processes, and technology to deliver a better patient and provider experience.
Currently, Ruston holds the position of Communications Manager at Odyssey Engineering Group. In this capacity, he plays a pivotal role in shaping the company’s marketing and business development strategy, managing external engagement, and coordinating general IT support. His primary focus is on promoting Odyssey Engineering Group, its services, and team members within the Greater Houston development and infrastructure community.
Committed to making a difference beyond his professional life, Ruston serves on the Board of Directors for Healthcare for the Homeless – Houston, The Board of Directors for OakBend Medical Center, as a Commissioner for Fort Bend County Emergency Services District #7, and is an active member of Sugar Land Baptist Church
On a personal note, Ruston has been married to Ellen for 33 years. Together, they raised their two children in east Fort Bend County, where they have lived for 31 years.
